December 31st, 1999 📆
A quick history lesson for those who may not understand Y2K (or weren’t alive yet): the fear was that computer systems would fail when the calendar rolled over from December 31, 1999, to January 1, 2000. This fear stemmed from how older computer systems and software handled dates, often storing years as two digits (e.g., "99" for 1999). When the year turned to "00," there was widespread concern that systems would misinterpret the year as 1900 instead of 2000, leading to potential errors or malfunctions.
This “Y2K bug” led to specific fears such as banking system failures, transportation system crashes, military system malfunctions, global economic collapse, and doomsday scenarios playing out. Despite companies spending billions of dollars on updating and testing systems, the computers didn’t crash, and they party carried on! 🎉
