Top Gun was released on May 16, 1986, and quickly became a pop culture phenomenon. Directed by Tony Scott, the film starred Tom Cruise as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a daring U.S. Navy pilot training at the elite Fighter Weapons School. With its thrilling aerial sequences, memorable soundtrack, and charismatic cast, Top Gun earned over $350 million at the global box office and became the highest-grossing film of the year.
The movie featured real F-14 Tomcat fighter jets, with support from the U.S. Navy, adding authenticity to its high-speed dogfights. It also boosted Navy recruitment significantly after its release. Beyond the action, the film explored themes of rivalry and loss, and got “Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins stuck in your head.
