"It's a big game of Tetris" -every dad ever while packing a moving truck

In partnership with

Today, we’re dialing the time machine to June 6th, 1984. Today was the day that Tetris was initially published, which to this day is still frustrating people enough to cause them to throw their phones across the room. (Not me, other people)

One of the only things that’s more satisfying than a line-clear in Tetris? Sending this newsletter to a friend.

Let’s go! 🚀

June 6th, 1984 📆

how satisfying is this?

On June 6th, 1984, the game of Tetris fell into place. See what I did there?

The mind behind one of the world’s most addicting games was Soviet computer programmer Alexey Pajitnov. He created the game on an Electronika 60 computer with a very simple concept: rotate and drop geometric shapes to clear lines. Throughout the 80s, the game expanded to computers, arcades, and even calculators.

The game quickly became popular among Soviet programmers and soon leaked beyond the Iron Curtain via floppy disk. Western companies got wind of it, sparking a messy, Cold War-era licensing scramble involving shady contracts, multiple claimants, and even KGB involvement. The rights were eventually secured by Nintendo, which bundled Tetris with the Game Boy in 1989.

Tetris has stood the test of time. It is the best-selling video game of all time with over 520 million copies sold.

OOTD On This Day🧢

This picture is so 1984, it hurts. The hair, the bright colors, the oversized sweaters, and especially the movie theater attendant wearing a bow tie.

Happy Birthday🎂
